Ed Murphey History
Ed Murphey was one of the most dominant athletes in the University of Tennessee track & field history, excelling from 1954 to 1957 as a cross country and track standout. A three-time SEC champion in the mile and an All-American in 1956, he set multiple records and narrowly missed qualifying for the 1956 U.S. Olympic team. His legacy continued through the Ed Murphey Award, established in 1965 to honor outstanding men's track & field performances at UT. Murphey, who passed away in 2014, was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2005.
